It was to be a place for simple living, lawn games, and time on the water, with space for boats, cars, kayaks, bikes and fishing gear. The clients wanted a design distinct to the place of Akaroa and reflective of its historic mission style, accentuating their experience of days by the coast. The design includes two houses. The front house draws inspiration from traditional mission houses. The rear house is a classic two-storey gable form typical of a New Zealand barn, with interiors reminiscent of a Kiwi bach. Their restrained nature allows them to sit sympathetically within the humble context of neighbouring cottages, painted picket fences and mature native trees populated by local wood pigeons. Breaking the building into two distinctive forms ensured the scale requested in the brief remained in keeping with, and complementary to, surrounding dwellings. One that maximises views to the lake but offered areas of privacy from people and shelter from the winds and sun. A building sits nestled down, intentially designed to screen neighbours. Simple and unassuming, two horizontal pavilions, a two-storey bedroom pavilion carved out of the hill with upper-level car port and private apartment. Generous central arrival steps lead down from the upper level into a landscaped courtyard, one of trees and gardens, an oasis. The front single storey living pavilion accessed through the courtyard. Simple spaces connecting directly to an outside shared central courtyard. The horizontal roof planes with roof gardens provide shelter but accentuate the panoramic views across the lake. Timber ceiling linings and cabinetry pieces soften the house, bringing in warmth and texture. Light filters through the house casting mood through the interplay of light and shadow. Their love of the mid-century style drove the use of simple materials—creating a warm, character filled spaces. Simple and unassuming from the street, it is orientated to maximise views of the lake while shelting from the wind and sun. The courtyard layout and careful&nbsp;planning of angled rooms&nbsp;creates pockets of space with sightlines through to the water beyond.&nbsp; The sitting space—an intermediary room—forms the key connection in these moments. Exposed beams, timber flooring and ceiling linings soften the house, bringing warmth and texture. Light filters through the house casting mood through the interplay of light and shadow. The long and narrow site is at the end of an established suburban cul-de-sac and sits high on the hill above Alexandra. Exposed with Central Otago schist rock and thyme. The site has expansive views across the Clutha River to the rolling plains of the Maniototo and across to the iconic Hawkdun range. The design response was to tread lightly. A series of box forms elevated above the exposed rock face allowing the rock to breath, to dominate. The boxes sitting on steel poles to create a tenuous relationship with the ground. The boxes breaking up the scale of the building to the exterior, creating individual spaces to the interior. Solid plastered block volumes connect the boxes back to the rock. The secondary linking structures between enhance this sense of being elevated, but also allow shafts of light to shine down onto the rock below. The house footprint arranged around the exposed rocks, with spaces arranged to connect interiors with views through to the ‘feature’ rocks. They wanted a home that captured the views of the mountains and gorge—a contemporary, low-maintenance home quietly sitting in the vines. Spaces to accommodate just a couple and expand to accommodate their children and grandchildren. A house on a modest budget. The architectural response is a house strategically positioned on the edge of the gully to minimise disruption to the functioning vineyard. The building is formed from two strong boxes, crossing over to form a T-shaped plan, to maximise the views, block the road noise, capture sun and shelter from wind. The living being the east west spine to provide for morning and afternoon sun. the main bedroom being on the north its own private space. &nbsp;The guest bedrooms including bunkroom for the kids on the south section of the T. Connected outdoor living spaces sheltered from the prevailing winds, offering sunshine and shelter at different times of the day and year The connection to the land varies. To the east it sits off the ground with a tapered view to the Nevis Bluff from the kitchen area window seat, the gully planted in natives. In contrast the west, the living and deck is connected and nestled within the vines. A new driveway meanders down between the gully and the vines, a small mound planted with native shrubs to the north of the house shields views from the highway and vice versa. The house is single storey with a low slug roof line to minimise any visual impact from the neighbours. The house had to be designed to maintain the essence of the site, the park-like surroundings, and to retain all trees. It had to capture the sun at across the day and champion the spectacular mountain views. The three-bedroom house had to allow for family life with young school aged daughters and working parents.&nbsp; Separate study and TV rooms to be connected to, but separate from the main living spaces. We created a modern home meandering around a large tree resulting in a ”Z” shape forming various spaces for shelter and sitting.&nbsp; The plan twists, capturing differing views, offering a range of site connections and ever-changing light as you wander through the house. Standing high off the ground, the main bedroom looks out to the Crown Terrace and captures the morning light. The kids’ wing is connected to the ground, carved into the slope of the site. The rooms here are nestled in, but open out to the shared space of the North lawn. The structured North courtyard and entertaining area opens to the view across the trees to the mountains beyond.&nbsp; A path connects the cottage and the house. It all began with a discussion with the clients, when they were seeking design ideas for the stair and progressively evolved into a full detailed renovation of each internal and external space of the entire house, including a series of living spaces, the courtyard (a room in its own right), a garage for beautiful cars and a train station to create, run and display model trains. Each space is different, reflecting the personalities of the clients, the use of the room and the surrounding landscape. Each space works with a limited palette of materials; dark stained timber boards and grey tiles to connect back to the colours and textures of the surrounding mountains, juxtaposed with simple white walls and ceilings. The lightness starts at the upper level of the main living and as one meanders down levels, the spaces become darker and more private. It was to incorporate a mix of contemporary clean lines with warm textures and high quality, durable, low maintenance but friendly materials. A home with a lodge feel; large volume open plan living, split into distinct but flexible entertaining spaces and countered with smaller cosy spots. Living areas linked to sheltered outdoor spaces suitable for use at different times of day and in various weather conditions. The house is hunkered down in the hillside, protected from the prevailing winds. The living stepped down to float over the planted gully.&nbsp; A small den to slip away to, cosy in the middle of the house.&nbsp; Contrasting space, the main bedroom capturing the drama to the
